On labour day, 2006, an appeal was submitted to the President of
India to secure the rights of the mineworkers of Rajasthan. The
focus was especially given to the problem of silcoisis. The petition
to the Honourable President of India had the following points:
- Constitute an independent commision for the examination &
identiication of mineworkers with silicoisis in Rajasthan.
- Allocate Rs. 50 million from the Presdent's fund for the welfare
and the relief to the affected miners in Rajasthan.
- Ensure strict and effective implentation of the Mines Act of
1952.
Food First Information and Action Network (FIAN)
is an international network which works on human rights for ood.
HEDCON has submitted a writ against the government of Rajasthan
for violation of the right to food for the mineworkers afacted with
Silcoisis.
"Jan Sunwais" or public hearings are attended
by mineworkers, mineowners, government officials, NGOs, and eminent
people from different walks of life. Two such public hearings were
held recently at Bikaner and Jodhpur where 306 people partcipated
and the resource persons included a CGM, an advocate, and a journalist.
Jodhpur- 13 cases were dealt with and a total remuneration
of Rs. 59,000 was provided to the mineworkers.
Nagaur - 13 cases filed. Remunration for 6 cases,
totalling Rs. 21,000 was provided to the mineworkers.
